Parenting Plan Assessments (formerly known as custody and access assessments)
This service is for parents who have been previously unsuccessful in resolving parenting issues in the context of a separation/divorce.
The Parenting Plan Assessment identifies the needs and best interests of the child(ren) and the ability and willingness of each parent to satisfy those needs. This process explores, among other aspects, the nature of the relationship between the child and each parent/extended family, and the co-parenting relationship.
At the end of this process, the parents/their lawyers and the court will be presented with a recommended Parenting Plan setting out the most appropriate parenting arrangement for the child(ren). This Plan will include recommendations on which parent should be given decision-making responsibility (if not both), and the parenting time for each parent.
Self referrals, family lawyers and other community professionals may make referrals for this service.
The steps involved in this process include information gathering through interviews, reviewing documentation, conducting observational visits, arranging psychological assessments if deemed relevant, and conducting a disclosure meeting where I will present the Parenting Plan. The parties are encouraged to reach a settlement. Otherwise, they may request the writing of a comprehensive Report for use in court.
A Parenting Plan Assessment takes approximately 40 to 60 hours and between three to four months to complete. However, this time frame varies, depending on the family's particular circumstances and if a Report is requested.
